Phonetic speller

Phonetics make call signs clear on noisy channels. The FCC rules encourage them for phone identification (47 CFR 97.119(b)(2)).

Spell it out

  1. WWhiskey
  2. 1One
  3. AAlfa
  4. WWhiskey

Practice

Say a random call sign out loud in phonetics, then check yourself.

How it works

  • These are the spellings in ITU Radio Regulations Appendix 14, also used by the FAA. Some references print Alpha and Juliet instead of Alfa and Juliett; they are spoken the same way.
  • Appendix 14 also defines code words for digits (Nadazero, Unaone and so on); this tool speaks digits as plain numbers.
